Austere Weekend

The 2019 program is under development. Below are some of the topics that are confirmed. As the program for this year is developed we will update the page. 

Camping is optional. All participants will be assigned a lean to at check in. You may bring your own tent. Lean to bunk mates will be coordinated at check in. 

All topics will are set up to be “start to finish” medicine, meaning that presenters will begin with the most basic treatments and conclude with physician level care. Wilderness enthusiasts, general public, first responders, EMTs, paramedics, nurses, and physicians are welcome to attend and will learn something they didn’t know before.

2019 AEMS Weekend Program Guide

Bleeding Control (BCON)

Participants of the national Stop-the-bleed program session will learn the basics of bleeding control that can be used to save lives during traumatic events. Tourniquet application, wound packing, and pressure dressings will be taught and practiced by students on bleeding and training simulators. A BCON certificate will be issued to participants that complete the session. This session is being hosted Friday night only and is mandatory if you have never taken a bleeding control, TECC, or TCCC course.

Snake Bites and Lightning Strikes

Two of the most common things that can strike you in the wilderness, venomous snakes and lightning. Learn how to avoid them and what you can do if you or someone with you is bitten by a venomous snake or becomes unresponsive after being struck by lightning.

TCCC Medical Skills

Anyone can perform medical skills in a well lit ambulance. Can you start an IO, apply a TQ, pack a wound in low light, no light, under night vision, or blindfolded? How about when your hands are ice cold, with flashing lights and some death metal music playing in the background, in full body armor? You will attempt to perform all of the medical skills in the TCCC curricula in the most challenging of environments that we can construct in this ALL HANDS ON / NO POWER POINT session. Practice and learn all the skills TCCC has to offer: Tourniquets, wound packing, pressure dressings, chest seals, needle decompression, NPAs, the new iGels, surgical airways, IO/IV.

NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience. A self-study or “eLearning module” which is completed online in your own time frame and a hands-on practical portion conducted in a classroom and shooting range with an Instructor.

Firearms Safety for First Responders

This class will each students how to unload and make safe various types of firearms such as revolvers, semi automatic handguns, rifles, and shot guns. Students who meet the qualifications will receive the NRA Home Fire Arms Safety certification.
Fire arms and ammunition will be provided and are included in registration. OUTSIDE FIRE ARMS AND AMMUNITION ARE NOT PERMITTED.

Field Laboratory

The Field Laboratory will be host to several medical stations that may be used in the austere environment. Point of Care Ultrasound to conduct eFAST exams, wound care/skin stapling/suturing, Blood typing, Point of care lab testing, and much more.

Dive Medicine and Intro to SCUBA

Instructor: David Massey / Ocean Spirit Aquatics

Participants will learn about the effects of pressure under the seas as it pertains to the human body and the trauma that can occur to the ears, sinuses, mouth. Arterial gas embolisms, GI disorders, oxygen / CO2 toxicity, and nitrogen narcosis will be explained. Following the lecture participants will have the opportunity to use SCUBA in the pool to experience the effects of pressures on the body.

Rope Rescue Awareness

Instructor: Dave Bell & Matt Heston

We have an all new rope rescue awareness class. It will consist of an introduction into reapelling and an overview of high angle rescue. Students will receive a safety briefing, learn how to secure a patient for high angle extrication, assessment, field treatment, and extrication of injured patients that have fallen from heights. Students will learn to prepare patient for transport patients for transport using a sled and stokes basket. Students can put into practice what they learn by rappelling off of the 60 foot tower. An expanded hight angle and trench rope portion of this class is in the works for 2019. If you took it last year, you can refresh what you learned as well as some new rope techniques.

Base Camp

Participants will learn everything needed to create a camp to receive a patient in the wilderness until transport can arrive. Students will have the opportunity to create three types of emergency shelters, learn water purification and fire building techniques, and identify edible plants. Medical information regarding all of the above will be covered including hypothermia, and GI illnesses from unsafe water and un-edible plants.
